海外の教育機関、特に大学・大学院では、出願者の人格を知る資料として、推薦状を重視する。推薦状を２、３通提出するように義務づけている学校も多い。推薦状の一通は、学業面を中心に自分のことをよく知っている大学の教授に書いてもらうようにしたい。その他、高校の教師、サークル・研究会などで自分を指導する立場にある人に書いてもらうとよい。以下の例は、担当教授からの推薦状。

(1)It is a great pleasure for me to recommend Ms. Nami Sugimoto to your renowned program.I instructed Ms. Sugimoto in her junior and senior years in my regular international economics class held once a week and
also in my international studies seminar held twice a week.Simultaneously I gave her guidance on her graduation thesis as the insutructor in charge.I am accordingly well acquainted with her ability,character and qualifications.
(2)Ms. Sugimoto's graduation thesis was on the great impact on US-Japan relations and trade friction Japanese non-tariff barriers had. She analyzed the topic not only from economic viewpoints but also from political and cultual aspects. Her work was excellently done,and I awarded her the highest mark.
My international studies seminar is considered one of the most difficult in the Faculty of Political Science and Economics for students to join, due to strict selectoin criteria in academic terms. But Ms.Sugimoto cleared the hurdle satisfactorily and joined the seminar. She was always enthusiastic about discussing various subjects at my international sutudies seminer and had to attend frequent study meetings on macroeconomics and microeconomics. She is of a bright nature and took the leadership in holding and attending such meetings.I also attended her marriage ceremony, and was impressed to know how many good freinds she had.
(3)She hopes to study in your International Affairs program. I am confident that she is qualified to successfully complete her studies at your school,which is one of the prestigious universities in the US. She is now working actively as a reseacher at a NGO, and if she is allowed to study and acquire necessary information on International Affairs at your school, I believe she will be able to work even more actively than now and make a debut on the international scene.
