嘆願書
ー英文レターサンプルー
petition と呼ばれる嘆願書。
大学や学部の規則に対して免除や例外扱いを求める場合に書く書類です。
たとえば職務を通じた知識があることを理由に、必修科目の履修を免除してもらうように頼んだり。
特別な理由で締切りを守れなかったときに善処を求めたり。
また、卒業資格を認定してもらえず、出願を受けつけてくれなかった場合などに、提出します。
欧米の大学では、出願者や学生からのさまざまな要請に対し、かなり柔軟に対応してくれます。
無理だと思う前にかけ合ってみるとよいでしょう。
また、そういった場合は嘆願書だけを提出するのではなく、それをサポートする資料や書類があればともに提出する事をお勧めします。
下記のサンプルは、大検資格を認めて出願を受け付けるように要請する、嘆願書の例です。
嘆願書を作成する際のポイント
1.何について嘆願するのかを冒頭ではっきり記す
2.要請の具体的内容とその根拠について、具体的な例を示す
このケースでは、日本の大検資格を先方が認定せず出願が受理されなかったため、大検が日本政府（文部科学省）により管轄されている制度であることを説明しています。
日本の制度に対する不理解によるアクシデントだけに、理解がいくよう説明するのがポイント。

I applied for your undergraduate program last December, but my application was not accepted. The reason stated in the letter dated January 12 was that I didn’t show the evidence of completing 12 years of education in my country, Japan. Although I did not graduate from high school, I passed Daigaku Nyushi Kentei Shiken (College Entrance Diploma Examination-known as “Daiken” in Japan). Daiken, which consists of 11 subjects, is administered by Japan’s Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, and is equivalent to a high school graduation diploma like GED in the US (please see the copy of the diploma and the transcript enclosed in my application). This test is acknowledged by all higher educational institutions in Japan. As such, I believe that I am eligible for your undergraduate program.
I would appreciate it if you could reconsider my application.
