5 Things You Need to Know Before Starting an Internship

Starting your career can be exciting, however, when you are about to begin a new internship (especially if it’s your first one) it can be a bit scary. Since, you don’t always know what to expect when starting one and it’s a real taste of what is like to work in the real world. Therefore, we want to give some tips before you start your new internship in order for you to be successful! 1. Dress appropriately Knowing how to dress up for each occasion is important. Especially when starting a new internship, you wouldn’t want to be the odd one standing out. Therefore, before starting your internship we recommend talking to your supervisor and asking what the dress code for the company is. It will not only help you look professional when starting your internship, but also shows that you care about the image of your company and yourself. 2. Ask Questions! But Not Too Many Don’t be afraid to ask questions! It is always important, that is why you became an intern in the first place. To learn and experience new things in the area of work that interests you. It is normal for you not to know everything they ask you to do, or about the industry itself. Therefore, when needed ask as much as you think it’s necessary. It will show your supervisor that you are engaged and are ready to start working. However, if you ask too many questions it can be a bit overwhelming for your supervisor or coworkers. It is natural that as an intern you might make some mistakes, so trust yourself and do the best you can. In case you do make a mistake, it won’t be as bad as you think. You are there to learn so it is normal for this to happen. 3. Be Nice and Interact with your Fellow Interns and Coworkers When you start working, make sure to introduce yourself and say “Hi” to the people that you work with. You always want to come off as friendly and approachable when you begin working somewhere new. As important as it is for them to be friendly towards you, the same thing needs to be shown on their direction. That way you not only you will create a friendly working environment, but you get to make friends and connections with those around you. Remember communication is always important! 4. Make a Routine and Set Goals Setting a routine when you begin a new job is always a good idea. It helps you become more focused and organize your tasks in an efficient way. This way it will be easier for you to feel less nervous and be able to get your work done on time. Setting goals is also very helpful. As an intern you always want to show that you are capable of doing your tasks and even do more if possible. Therefore, setting goals for yourself will always help you accomplish more in your work area. It can also help you by motivating you to learn more skills. If you feel comfortable enough, share your goals with your supervisor or coworkers, this can help you accomplish those goals and gain all the experience you can from your internship. 5. Get Involved and Have Fun!! Get involved!! You’re starting a new job! In order to get the most out of this experience is for you to get involved with your company and build connections with the people that you work with. Use the company resources to become more skilled and efficient in your field. These opportunities don’t come often, so try to get as much benefit from it as possible. Learn as much as you can and most importantly don’t forget to have fun! Doing an internship does require a lot of hard work however, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the ride while you’re at it. Like I mentioned, these opportunities don’t come often so try to enjoy it as much as possible. Make friends! Explore your passion! Do your best work! This not only will help the company, but it will help you have a more enjoyable experience. We wish you the best of luck in your future internships and hope these tips were helpful to you!
